Paul McGuire Grimes, creator of Paul’s Trip to the Movies has two great movies to see this weekend and a streaming series if you want to stay at home.
ALADDIN (in theaters)
Disney has four live action remakes in theaters in 2019 with Aladdin being their second one of the year. It’s a beloved animated classic for my generation, but is it a little too soon to bring it back? Many consider Aladdin a “street rat” as he’s an orphan who, along with his pet monkey, wander the streets stealing food and live on a rooftop. It’s there in the streets where he meets Princess Jasmine who’s in disguise desperately trying to have some down time away from the castle. He’s smitten with her and doesn’t even realize she’s the princess. Back at the castle, the Sultan’s right hand man, Jafar, wants to rule the kingdom and will stop at nothing to make that happen. He knows the only way to do that is to get the magical lamp out from the cave. The only person who can do that is Aladdin, the “diamond in the rough.” Jafar’s men kidnap Aladdin and force him into the cave. Their diabolical plan is foiled when Aladdin escapes with the lamp barely making it out alive. Aladdin’s luck changes once he unleashes the Genie who grants him three wishes. His first wish is to become a prince in order to woo the princess.

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM (in theaters)
Keanu Reeves’ unstoppable assassin John Wick has marked a career high for the actor. The stakes are even higher and now everyone wants John dead. Chapter 3 picks up within minutes after the ending of Chapter 2 with a $14 million bounty on John’s head. The one hour window for John to be capture ends, and now that price tag goes up even more as he escapes the clutches of the High Table. He’s losing steam and there are eyes on him everywhere. John may try to run but there is no escaping or getting out of the mess he’s in. There are specific rules and consequences and we see how that affects everyone involved, not just John as now the High Table has placed ultimatums on Winston and the Bowery King. The story goes international for a bit, but it always comes back to the Continental Hotel which provides for a stunning set piece for its climax.
Is It Worth Your Trip to the Movies? Keanu Reeves is back and better than ever.

DEAD TO ME (Netflix Streaming TV series)
The new Netflix series Dead to Me is gaining a huge following thanks to its buzzy word of mouth approach. Christina Applegate stars as Jen who is mourning the death of her husband who was tragically hit by a car late one night. She meets Judy (Linda Cardellini) at a grief support group. Judy’s bubbly personally is a bit much for Jen at first who is still in the anger stage of grief. They eventually bond over that connection of having lost your husband unexpectedly, but Jen learns the hard way that Judy may not be fully telling the truth about her past.
