P.J. Fleck is a man on a mission. The 37 year old enters his second year as the head coach of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team, hoping to rebound from a lackluster 5-7 record in 2017. And by the look and sound of it, he’s got what’s needed to right the ship.
Fleck has gained national attention for his inspirational speeches and his commanding charisma, on display virtually any time a microphone is in front of him. But when he got together with Twin Cities Live host Steve Patterson, he admitted there is one person in his life who ultimately keeps him in check. A coach for the coach, if you will. That title belongs to his wife, Heather. In “Coffee with Cool People”, Coach Fleck went so far as to say it only takes one specific word from his wife to get his immediate attention. That word? Ironically, it’s “Coach.” But when she uses it, it’s her way of letting him know that she needs to talk to P.J. the husband and father, not the one fans see roaming the sidelines on Saturdays in the fall. When Coach Fleck hears that word from his wife, he knows it means he was being a bit like a jerk, and it’s time to snap out of it.
Having a steadying, grounding voice like that in his life will serve him well as he takes on the daunting task of taking a major college football program from middle of the pack to top of the heap. One game at a time.
