It was 1989 when Anoka native, Gretchen Carlson, was crowned Miss America. Now she is serving a whole different role in the organization as chairwoman of the competition. She is in town for the Crowns & Gowns gala and stopped by to chat about big changes to the “pageant”.
The first change is that it is no longer considered a pageant and will not include a swimsuit competition. Gretchen says there is no gown portion either. Instead they are asked to wear something that makes them feel confident and expresses their personal style. Contestants are asked it demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America.
